With the major cities in the Northeast experiencing the fourth major Nor’easter just this month, travel problems are common on the roads there and throughout the national air network. (Areas in/near DC are getting several inches of sticking snow today, and toward NYC the totals could approach one foot!)
Closer to home, a lesser but still significant storm may be coming on Saturday. It is too soon for details but there is decent agreement that a potent storm will track through the area late Friday night into Saturday. For now the favored track is south and west of Chicago and it would just sideswipe the area with snow while hardest-hit areas could see several inches. In that scenario the core of the city will be influenced by warm streets and lake waters and might not see anything stick, while areas 50-100 miles away could see a lot of sticking snow. Be prepared to see some panicky (and likely bogus) projected snow totals, but also be prepared for a material chance of travel disruption on Saturday. I will update on Friday morning if the odds turn in that direction.
