So yesterday was...interesting. That ended up as a day for the record books, and it was far worse that it looked at any point in advance. 1-3" looked like a good bet, but anything above 4-5" looked like a real stretch. I didn't think it would be anywhere close to 8" in the Chicago area, but everything came together perfectly and one heavy band of rain after another pounded a narrow corridor for almost 24 hours. My apologies for not putting something out in advance or during the storm, but it was hard to see these details coming. The cold front did not move as expected -- it sat in place for almost a full day, acting like a fire hose. In many locations this was a top-10 -- if not a top-5 -- rainfall event in recorded history. Some of the stunning numbers:
- Officially 4.11" at O'Hare. (And many places were far worse -- see below.) Using that 4.11", there have only been 11 other days (out of 53,000+) with more rain in Chicago history. And that 4.11" set the record for the all-time wettest day in October.
- The highest tallies I've seen: 8.16" Lisle, 8.11" Downers Grove, 7.90" Burr Ridge, 7.55" Clarendon Hills (on my imperfectly located rain gauge); 7.45" Riverside
